Dedicated to raising money for breast cancer research and services; committed to helping individuals realize their own power to make the world what we dream it can be.

Participants have raised more than 2 million euro in 3 years!

PARTICIPANTS RAISE 1 MILLION EURO FOR RESEARCH

When a focused group of committed individuals pull together, incredible things can happen. The 545 participants of the third annual A Sister's Hope 60km Walk, held October 10-11, 2009, have generated 1 million euro for breast cancer researchers in The Netherlands.

Supported all weekend by 80 dedicated volunteers, the 465 walkers journeyed from Amersfoort to Amsterdam under skies that were not always sunny. Yet they showed up Saturday afternoon at the Sister's Hope camp in Weesp wearing smiles and waving their arms in celebration. The medical team stayed busy with treating blisters and the massage team continued pampering the walkers through the evening until it was time for Band Blauw - a police band from Haarlem - to re-energize the crowd.

The mayor of Weesp got up early to greet the participants and thank them for their commitment to this cause, then Olympian Olga Commandeur, ambassador of A Sister's Hope, stepped onto her podium and warmed the walkers for their final 27 kilometers. The gray skies cracked open just before the participants entered the Olympic Stadium early Sunday evening and the sun shining down on them as they walked down the stairs toward their cheering loved ones was an unspoken "thank you," a natural sign that what they had just done was amazing.

No, there was not much media attention from the weekend, but the researchers who devote their professional lives to battling breast cancer and the women and men of The Netherlands who have been faced with this disease have taken notice. The front-page news we all are working toward is the headline that says, "We Have the Cure."

To all the Walkers and Crew, we hope you realize the difference you are making. To all the people who supported this year's participants, thank you. Together, we make incredible things happen.

A SISTER'S HOPE

Welcome to A Sister's Hope! We're glad you are here. By visiting our website, you've taken the first step in changing the world for individuals with breast cancer. Thank you.

The fact that you are reading this means you already have decided you want to help. You probably already know the statistics that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Researchers grow closer to identifying a cure or the cause with each passing year, though that is not fast enough for many of us, particularly those who receive saddening news about a biopsy. Different organizations and research institutions are tackling the issue from many angles - effective treatments, improved diagnosis, factors related to a cause, etc. - and each requires its own funding. This is where A Sister's Hope helps.

We are creating and producing events designed for individuals who want to help, who want a challenge, who understand that the responsibility for addressing breast cancer falls on us all. Our events will push you. Our events will require you to reach deeper than that comfort level to which you've grown accustomed. You might get to a point when you think you just can not go on, or when you feel you can not ask one more person to support your commitment with a donation. At that moment, remember what it was that gave you the courage to register for the event. Was it because someone you know is going through chemotherapy? Did you need a challenge in your life to test yourself or add perspective? Did breast cancer claim the life of someone you love?
