More about the Event

A Sister's Hope staff can coach registrants on how to meet and exceed that donation minimum. Walkers of the 2007 Netherlands event averaged well above the 1,500 minimum. Crew members are encouraged to collect donations, but it is not a requirement. The second-highest fundraiser in A Sister's Hope 60K 2007 was crew member Sonja Wijnberg with 8,500 euros! Walkers find that they not only meet the donation minimum, they far exceed it. You can, too.

Walkers and crew members will check in on Friday evening at a location near the walk's starting point. Everyone is on their own for lodging on Friday night, but we all meet the next morning for a sendoff filled with inspiration. A mere four or five kilometers down the route, the crew will welcome walkers into a refreshment camp, complete with drinks, snacks and toilets. Walkers will find these crew members taking care of them throughout the day, including a lunch break that proves to be a wonderful time to sit, stretch and make new friends. If walkers get tired along the route and can not complete the day’s kilometers, crew members will be shuttling up and down the route to pick up anyone who needs a lift.

The first day ends at Sisters Camp, a temporary village where walkers and crew members alike will enjoy a hot, satisfying dinner, entertainment and powerful messages from our beneficiaries or participants. We encourage everyone to pitch their tents and spend the night in the village, near the people who are making this journey with them. Breakfast is served at Camp the next morning before walkers step out onto the trails. Crew members will continue supporting the walkers all day until the final walker has reached the closing ceremony site. At that point, everyone joins together. It’s a time to get phone numbers and email addresses, to make plans for a reunion to see each other’s photos from the Walk. It’s a time to reflect on the past 48 hours.

The closing ceremony will honor all participants. It will honor breast cancer survivors. It also will honor those who did not survive breast cancer. And it will impress upon all of us the importance of the weekend, the realization of what this group of amazing individuals accomplished, and the possibilities that lie within us and ahead.
